Does National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Really Have Powers To Close Down Radio & Television Stations. Daily Law Tips (Tip 345) by Onyekachi Umah, Esq., LLM. ACIArb(UK)
National Broadcasting Co mmission (NBC) is the regulator of broadcasting business in Nigeria and advisor to Nigerian government on the National Mass Communication Policy. It grants licenses to broadcasting organisations including television, sound, radio, cable and satellite stations. It also regulates broadcasting stations location, equipments and conducts. As expected, having powers issue broadcasting licenses, NBC equally has powers to warn, suspend or revoke licensees/licenses in any part of Nigeria, as it deems fit. Hence, without approaching any court or tribunal, the NBC has statutory powers to close down broadcasting stations in any part of Nigeria.
