The Federal Government of Nigeria established the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) via a federal law (the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [Establishment] Act 2004). The law provides that the EFCC has the “responsibility for the enforcement of all economic and financial crimes laws, among other things”. It describes the EFCC as the “designated Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in Nigeria , which is charged with the responsibility of co-ordinating the various institutions involved in the fight against money laundering and enforcement of all laws dealing with economic and financial crimes in Nigeria”.
Here is a recent judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria that has further interpreted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [Establishment] Act 2004; Dr. Joseph Nwobike SAN Vs. Federal Republic of Nigeria: Full Judgement
