3 Reasons Electricity Supply Can Be Lawfully Disconnected In Nigeria Without Notice

3 Reasons Electricity Supply Can Be Lawfully Disconnected In Nigeria Without Notice. Daily Law Tips (Tip 481) by Onyekachi Umah, Esq., LLM. ACIArb(UK)

The Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) in charge of an area can disconnect a customer without any notice for any of the following 3 reasons:

  1. Where a customer has an illegal network/connection to electricity
  2. Where a customer’s connection is dangerous to health or to integrity of the network or to quality of electricity supply to other consumers
  3. Where the meter of a customer is not accessible to be read for 3 consecutive bills.

Where for any of the above reasons a meter is disconnected, it will be reconnected after concerned customer makes satisfactory electricity supply arrangement and pays approved fees (reconnection fee, administrative fee, back bills) or agrees to pay such to the DisCo. After payment, a customer must be reconnected with 48 hours.
