The Convention was adopted and opened for signature, ratification and accession by General Assembly resolution 34/180 of 18 December 1979 entry into force 3 September 1981.

The Convention has been grouped into Four parts of about 30 articles that emphasize on the need to abolish all discriminations against women.

The Convention rightly defined what discrimination means. It said that for the purposes of the present Convention, the term “discrimination against women” shall mean any distinction, exclusion or restriction made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of their marital status, on a basis of equality of men and women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field.

Accordingly, the Convention enjoined all state parties to as a matter of priority eliminate all forms of discrimination against women.
