The Act was enacted by the National Assembly and was signed into law on the 15th day of October, 2019 by President Mohammadu Buhari.

The motivation for the Act is founded on the need to safeguard the interest of farmers against nutrient deficiencies, adulteration, misleading claims and short weight. It also has the interest of private sector engagement in the fertiliser industry at heart, hence, the Act seeks to create an enabling environment for them.

The Act has 29 sections and 2 Schedules. All of which are divided into 4 parts.
