Another Law That Binds Nigerians Even Outside Nigeria. Daily Law Tips (Tip 351) by Onyekachi Umah, Esq., LLM. ACIArb(UK)
Most laws in Nigeria bind persons in Nigeria. Among the few laws of Nigeria that bind persons outside Nigeria is the Official Secrets Act.
Official Secrets Act is a federal law made to secure public safety through protection of official information and defence establishments, restriction on photography and records during periods of emergency and the control of mail forwarding agencies. The law prohibits any person from transmitting classified information among others. It binds Nigerians inside Nigeria and even outside Nigeria. So, all Nigerians in any part of the world must adhere to the Official Secrets Act.
Committing an offence under the Official Secrets Act is punishable with imprisonment for not more than 14 years for conviction on indictment but punishable with imprisonment for not more than 2 years and or fine of #100.00. Specially, failure to comply with a requisition by Nigerian Police or the provision of false information is punishable with imprisonment for not more than 3 months and or fine not more than #200.00
