At the unveiling of www.Pil.legal, keynote speaker Onyekachi Umah, FCIArb(UK), argued that Nigeria’s legal profession, with over 140,000 lawyers spread across 36 states, has outgrown the referral-and-reputation system it still runs on. The future belongs to platforms that make trust demonstrable: verified credentials, fees benchmarked to the law, and escrow-protected payment, so neither lawyer nor client has to move first on faith alone.

In the keynote address at the unveiling (which is our 52nd SabiLaw Lecture Series), Onyekachi Umah emphasised that “The biggest constraint on a capable lawyer is rarely skill. It’s visibility”, on why lawyers outside major cities; Lagos, Abuja and Portharcourt remain underused relative to their talent. Over 140,000 lawyers on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) record, across 36 states and the FCT, serving nearly 230 million Nigerians, more than 7 million registered business and over 1,300,000 migrants with no matching discovery or verification infrastructure. The trust gap has four faces: verification, fees, payment, and proof, each one currently left to informal trust rather than structural protection.

Hence, www.Pil.Legal has come to the rescue with verified lawyers, Remuneration Order fee benchmarking, secure escrow, and tamper-evident digital signing, trust made operational, not theoretical.
