The Anambra State Magistrates’ Court Law, 2021 establishes and regulates the Magistrates’ Courts in Anambra State and provides the legal framework governing their constitution, jurisdiction, powers, administration, and practice. The Law was enacted on the 3rd Day of October, 2021. It is divided into 11 chapters of 80 sections and 2 schedules. The Law modernises the operation of the Magistrates’ Courts and strengthens their role as courts of first instance in the administration of justice within the State.

The principal objectives of the Law are to ensure the efficient administration of justice at the magistracy level, define the civil and criminal jurisdiction of Magistrates’ Courts, regulate judicial appointments and court administration, improve access to justice, and promote the speedy and fair determination of cases within the competence of the courts.

The Law contains comprehensive provisions relating to the establishment and composition of Magistrates’ Courts, appointment and powers of magistrates, civil and criminal jurisdiction, court procedures, enforcement of judgments and orders, appeals, administrative supervision, and other matters necessary for the effective functioning of the magistracy. By strengthening the institutional framework of Magistrates’ Courts, the Law enhances grassroots access to justice, supports efficient dispute resolution, and contributes to the effective administration of justice in Anambra State.
