The Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, enacted on 15 May 2015, is Nigeria’s principal legislation on the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of cybercrimes, cybersecurity, and the protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure. The principal Act comprises 59 sections and 2 Schedules. It was subsequently strengthened by the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024, which contains 12 sections and updates the legal framework to address emerging cyber threats and enhance cybersecurity enforcement.

The Act seeks to prevent and combat cybercrime, protect computer systems and networks, facilitate the investigation and prosecution of cyber-related offences, promote cybersecurity best practices, and strengthen national and international cooperation. It criminalises offences such as unauthorised access to computer systems, identity theft, cyberstalking, online fraud, phishing, ransomware attacks, cyberterrorism, child online exploitation, and interference with computer systems and data. It also establishes investigative and enforcement mechanisms, prescribes penalties for cyber offences, and imposes obligations on service providers and other relevant stakeholders to support cybersecurity and law enforcement efforts.
