Every Academic Year In Nigeria Must End In June In Any Year

Every Academic Year In Nigeria Must End In June In Any Year. Daily Law Tips (Tip 586) by Onyekachi Umah, Esq., LLM. ACIArb(UK)

There is a federal law in Nigeria that regulates when school/academic years commence and end in Nigeria. Every school and college in Nigeria is by law mandated to commence school year in the month September and to end same in the month of June of the subsequent year.

This applies to private or public schools, government or religious schools, city or rural schools, mixed or single sex schools, day or boarding schools, without the exemption of any school or college in Nigeria.

Note that, Universities and institutions of higher learning are exempted from the above. So, the mandatory national wide academic year applies to all schools from Crèche, Nursery, Primary to Secondary Schools in any part of Nigeria.

There is a bill at the National Assembly (sponsored by Hon. Chukwuka Onyema) seeking for amendment of the School Year (Variation) Act, 1991 and the change of the closing month of a school year from June to now be July. The bill seems to have passed first reading since 12 October 2016.
