The Act establishes the Nigerian Police Trust Fund to among other things, provide funds for the training and retraining of the personnel of the Nigerian Police Force, provide state of the art security equipment and machineries to improve the general welfare of the personnel of the Nigerian Police Force and enhance their preparedness to effectively discharge their constitutional duty of protecting life and property of Nigerian people.

The Act was signed into law by President Mohammadu Buhari on the 24th of June, 2019.
The Act contains is divided into 5 parts and 30 sections with a schedule.
Interestingly, the Police Trust Fund is to operate for a period of six (6) years starting from the commencement date after which it shall cease to exist except where it is extended by an Act of the National Assembly.
