The Regulations were made on the 27th day of January 2016 by Engr. Suleiman H. Adam, FNSE, Minister of Water Resources in the exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 19 of the Water Resources Act, Cap W2 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 which is amended by the Water Resources (Amendment) Act, 2016.

This Water Resources and Licence Regulations has been amended. It is now the Water Use and Licence Regulations 2020

The objectives of the regulations include but are not exclusive to the following;

a.To protect, conserve, and control water resources for equitable and sustainable social and economic development and to maintain environmental integrity.

b. Ensure allocation and supply and distribution of water resources for all uses to promote equitable, sustainable and sufficient best practices and conduct etc.

The Regulations have been partitioned into 28 sections, 5 parts and 7 Schedules.
