Following the enactment of the Nigerian Correction Service Act 2019, the Nigerian Prisons was renamed Correctional Centers and several improvements were made. This includes the Non-Custodial Measures like; Community Service, Probation, Parole, Restorative Justice and any other measure ordered by a court.

Community Service measure is also open to prisoners (inmates) already serving imprisonments imposed on them within the last 6 months before the Nigerian Correction Service Act 2019 came into operation. Such prisoners can apply for community services, if eligible. The new law is said to have been signed on 14 August 2019, so 6 months backward will be 13 February 2019 to 14 August 2019.
